What exactly is a GANG?

"Criminal Gang" means a formal or informal ongoing organization, association, or group that consists of five or more persons who form for the purpose of committing criminal activity and who knowingly and actively participate in a pattern of criminal gang activity. (SC Code of Laws Section 16-8-230(2)).

In looser terminology, a gang can be described as a group of individuals who may claim control over certain territories and engage in illegal behavior. As history has shown, participants are often volatile, committing acts of violence toward rival gang members or the general public for even minor infractions of their code. Police officers and the public must understand that gang activity is not limited to any specific race, economic status, or political ideology. There are gangs exclusive to Black members, Hispanics, Asians and Whites. There are also a number of gangs which cross racial boundaries.

History

The Anderson County Gang Task Force was formed in February 2009 by Anderson County Sheriff John Skipper and Anderson City Police Chief Martin Brown. The Gang Task Force was formed for an immediate response to a rise in gang violence within Anderson County and Anderson City. The Task Force is manned with deputies from the Anderson County Sheriff's Office and Anderson City Police Department and is charged with investigating crimes involving gang members.

The class and type of crimes investigated by the unit vary from responding to citizen concerns about gang activity to shutting down narcotics rings and helping the Criminal Investigative Division investigate aggravated assaults and homicides. Gang activity is more complex than it has ever been, encompassing a wide range of groups. The community and the Sheriff's Office/Police Department now contend with juvenile street gangs, criminal prison gangs, and hate groups which statutorily meet the gang criteria. Most prevalent are the activities of street gangs. Their activities range from property damage to the most violent of crimes.

Mission

The Gang Task Force Mission is to eradicate gang activity through expanding the knowledge of our Citizens, Law Enforcement Agencies, Teachers and School Administrators.

This mission is accomplished through GANG AWARENESS PRESENTATIONS that are taught free of charge to any group requesting the presentations.
